Since March 2020, our lives have slowed down considerably or have even come to a standstill. The world has become slower and quieter; the Covid-19 pandemic has shifted both our rhythms and priorities. It had been clear for a while that hyper productivity does not improve our quality of life, but instead exhausts both ourselves and the planet. Slow Spatial Reader aligns with these developments and offers alternative scenario’s, other ways of looking at these rhythms and qualities, from a spatial perspective: via art, architecture, performance, choreography, somatic and transdisciplinary attitudes. The subtitle ‘radical affection’ indicates the search for different connections, attention and care for both humans and their environment in which tactility, intuition and in-depth knowledge are in touch with ratio.
Slow Spatial Reader offers a collection of essays about ‘Slow’ approaches to spatial practice and pedagogy (from twenty-four countries; five continents). Each one brings distinct philosophical and disciplinary approaches —from ‘spatial’ creative fields, but also research and activism—, exploring how we think about and engage with space at a range of scales, tempos and durations. Just like its predecessor, Slow Reader: A Resource for Design Thinking and Practice (Valiz, 2016), this publication is meant to start up a constructive dialogue between creative disciplines, with a plea for slower and more concentrated thinking and acting; thus stimulating essential changes and turns in our thinking, consciousness, labour and (co) existing.
